Description
This beautiful hymn Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee is also known as The Hymn to Joy. The poem was written in 1907 by Henry van Dyke (1852-1933). It is set to the famous Ode to Joy melody of the final movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125. The arrangement presented in this sheet music was made by Edward Hodges (1796-1867). It was first published in 1864 in The Trinity Collection of Church Music, as hymn number 254. It has been edited here in order only to add the dotted figure at the end of each line. The poem by Henry van Dyke was first combined with Beethoven's music in 1911 in the Presbyterian Hymnal.
This lively hymn can be a great addition to a wedding's music. You can play it as prelude or a recessional music.
Lyrics
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee God of glory, Lord of love, Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee Opening to the Sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness Fill us with the light of day. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flowery meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Well-spring of the joy of living, Ocean-depth of happy rest. Thou the Father, Christ our Brother, All who live in love are Thine. Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the Joy Divine. Mortals join the mighty chorus Which the morning stars began, Father-love is reigning over us, Brother-love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife. Joyful music lifts us sunward In the triumph song of life.
